Sensor, Sensor XR and Sensor XR/EP features

The SHUTR Sensor, Sensor XR and Sensor XR/EP are part of the SHUTR family of products and use the SHUTR Connect™ protocol. All are comparable in the way they can be used. The use of the word ‘sensor ’in this document refers to all sensor types. Specifics regarding Sensor XR and/or XR/EP are always noted separately.

he wireless sensor can be used in two ways:

  1. Linked to a SHUTR Controller it can be used to activate the dust collector connected to the SHUTR Controller or a combination of one or more SHUTR Gates and the dust collector. In this situation, the controller is also the configuration manager of the wireless SHUTR Connect™ network and its components.
  2. A Sensor can also be used to create a small wireless SHUTR network. Besides its normal sensor function, it will then also act as a configuration manager for the wireless SHUTR Connect™ network and its components. This configuration is called a Sensor+ configuration and allows for up to 4 gates with a maximum of 8 devices.
See Chapter Setting up the Sensor+ option for more information.
  3. The Sensor EP is capable of controlling a electro pneumatic sliding damper with a 24VDC coil. This way both SHUTR Gates and electro pneumatic gates can be controlled and managed in a single environment.

Linking a Sensor to a specific SHUTR Controller/Sensor+, or to a combination of a Controller/Sensor+ and one or more Gates, can be done with the pairing functionality of the SHUTR Connect™ App.

The rugged sensor comes with a cable clamp go clamp a power cable from a machine on to the back of the sensor. As soon as the dual magnetic HALL effect sensors sensea current in the power cable, due to the processing machine being switched ON, the SHUTR Sensor sends a wireless signal to the SHUTR Connect™ network. The sensitivity of the sensor can optionally be adjusted with the SHUTR Connect™ app to accommodate, for instance, a processing machine drawing current while in standby mode.

The SHUTR Connect™ app is available for Apple® iOS and Google® Android.

Mount the sensor on the power cable of a machine cable

Mount the sensor on the mains supply cable of a machine that you want to monitor. The sensors clamp is able to handle diameters from 8mm to 18mm. The cable clamp has two sides, one for thin wires and one for thick wires.

Once the cable is positioned in the ridge in the back of the sensor’s housing, with the sensor’s rocker switch facing upwards, tighten the two screws of the cable clamp but keep them slightly loose so that you are still able to just turn the cable of the machine.

Ceangail an braiteoir le foinse cumhachta

A sensor is equipped with a 4 meter long cable. It is not advisable to further extend the cable to prevent voltage titim.

SHUTR Sensor
The sensor is delivered with a dual port USB-A 5VDC wall mount adapter. This adapter is able to power two sensors (not for Sensor XR, XR/EP). Alternatively, the sensor can be powered by a SHUTR Gate. The Gate has a USB receptacle in the cable compartment specially for this purpose. This way less wall outlets are needed. The sensor’s USB cable does not carry any data wires, only 5V DC wires.

SHUTR Sensor XR and XR/EP
The Sensor XR and XR/EP are delivered with a 24VDC wall mount adaptor. Its cable is connected to the sensor via the bottom right cable entry on the sensor. The cable can be additionally strapped to the circuit board using a tie-wrap for extra strain relief. The Sensor XR can also be powered by a SHUTR Gate XR with a separate cable.

Connect a Sensor XR/EP to an electro pneumatic sliding damper
Suiteáil

The cable of the 24VDC coil of the elector pneumatic damper is attached to the Sensor EP via its bottom left cable entry. Make sure that the positive (+) and negative (-) wires of the coil are connected correctly to the respective connectors of the sensor.

The size of the electro pneumatic gate and its after-run can be set using the SHUTR App. Select the Sensor EP in the main screen of the App and choose ‘Config’.

Calabraigh an braiteoir

The sensor measures the magnetic field induced by current in the wire as soon as the machine is turned on. For best results, especially for machines that do not consume a lot of power, the sensor needs to be positioned on the cable for optimal
measurement with the following steps:

  1. Rocker switch in the A (AUTOMATIC) position
  2. Cas ar an meaisín
  3. Slowly turn the cable with the cable clamp loosely tightened
  4. The color of the indicator LED will turn from WHITE to GREEN and back to
    BÁN
  5. Find the middle position where the LED is GREEN
  6. Once the optimal position has been established tighten the two screws of the cable clamp: done!

Coigeartaigh íogaireacht an braiteora
The sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted with the SHUTR Connect app. There are two reasons the sensitivity might need to be altered:

  • The machine to be monitored consumes very little power hence a low current going through the cable: the sensor needs to be more sensitive.
  • The machine already consumes a certain amount of power despite the fact it is turned off (standby power consumption): the sensor needs to be less sensitive.
Refer to the SHUTR Controller Installation Guide for more information on the SHUTR
Connect app and changing the sensor sensitivity.

Refer to the SHUTR Controller Installation Guide for more information on the SHUTR Connect app and changing the sensor sensitivity.

Tips for mounting the sensor:
Please be aware that the SHUTR Sensor has an antenna inside the unit and the Sensor XR and Sensor XR/EP have an external antenna. Both must be kept clear as much as possible.

Do not mount the sensor inside a metal casing or behind a concrete/brick wall.

This will have a negative impact on the ability to communicate with other SHUTR components in the SHUTR Connect™ network.

An cábla clamp has two mounting holes. Use two 4mm screws to optionally mount the sensor to a wall. This way it is also easier to operate the rocker switch if needed.

An braiteoir a phéireáil

Configuring the SHUTR Connect network and its components is done using the SHUTR Connect app, available for Apple iOS and Google Android.

Péireáil is a very easy and quick method of setting up a SHUTR Connect™ network. Series are linked SHUTR components that work together in a logical way. A series may consist of one or more gate(s), and/or sensor(s) and/or remote(s).

The SHUTR Controller and/or gate(s), as part of a series, can be activated when:

  • A paired sensor for this series detects a current flow in the power cable of the woodworking machine to which this sensor is attached. (Rocker switch set to “A”)
  • A sensor for this series that has its rocker switch is set to “O” (ON)
  • The black (ON) button on a remote in the series is pressed.
  • The rocker switch or external switch on a gate in the series is set to “O” (ON).

Examples of series:

  • The most basic setup is the combination of a SHUTR controller and one or more remotes. With this setup you can simply switch ON and switch OFF the  dust collector (or any machine) with a remote. Note: not applicable for the Sensor+ configuration.
  • The combination of a SHUTR controller and one or more sensors. When a processing machine is switched ON, the sensor attached to its power cable will be activated. The controller will then be activated and switch the Dust Collector ON. Note: not applicable for the Sensor+ configuration.
  • The most common setup is a SHUTR controller or Sensor+ in combination with multiple series: one series for each processing machine. Each series consists of a sensor and a gate. When the processing machine is turned ON, the attached sensor detects this, the respective gate will open. When also using a SHUTR controller, the Dust Collector will be turned ON (this is not possible with the Sensor+ configuration).

Tábhachtach go mbeadh a fhios:

  • Pairing is always initiated from a SHUTR Controller or a SHUTR Sensor in Sensor+ configuration (which then acts as configuration manager)
  • The SHUTR Controller/Sensor+ is always part of a series

You can have multiple controllers in one location, each with their own series.

The Sensor+ option

Réamhrá
For limited installations it is possible to configure a SHUTR Sensor to also act as a configuration manager to manage a small configuration. Besides managing the configuration, the sensor will still function as a normal SHUTR sensor. This is called the Sensor+ option. It has the following limitations compared to using a SHUTR Controller to manage the configuration:

  • The dust collector cannot be switched ON or OFF automatically.
  • A maximum of 4 SHUTR Gates can be configured (paired with a sensor when required).
  • A maximum of 8 SHUTR devices can be configured (including the Sensor+ itself).
  • One ducting branch is supported which allows setting the minimum number of open gates.
  •  Advanced mode for branches using required airflow percentages is not supported.
  • Seachtrach dampers are only supported by a Sensor XR/EP.

Compared to the Sensor+ option, a SHUTR Controller supports:

  • Activation of the dust collector
  • up to 60 devices (for example: 30 Gates with 30 Sensors)
  • up to 6 branches
  • controlled airflow per branch
  • external pneumatic dampers.

Example where the Sensor+ option can be used would be a small workshop that requires only 4 gate/sensor pairs for the 4 woodworking machines requiring dust extraction. The dust collector would then be switched on manually, or by other means.

NÓTA: A SHUTR Sensor EP in Sensor+ mode can also be used ‘stand-alone’ to control the 24VDC electro pneumatic damper of a single machine.

The configuration manager part of the Sensor+ is represented in the SHUTR-app as a light grey rectangle icon showing its firmware version. It allows configuration options to be set for the global default values of sensor sensitivity, gate after-run, and LED on/off control.

The sensor part of the Sensor+ is always represented in the SHUTR-app in the first series with the same light grey as used for its mini-controller part. This icon also has a “+” to show it is the sensor part of the Sensor+. Only a sensors specific sensitivity can be set. The option for an external damper is only available when using a Sensor XR/EP
in Sensor+ mode.

An additional gate can be paired to this first series by selecting the first series (tap next to the sensor icon) and using the Pair option at the bottom of the screen. Note that the sensor part of the Sensor+ in the first series cannot be unpaired. Additional series can be paired using the Pair option, selecting a gate and sensor and naming the series.

Firmware update and rollback are possible the same way as with a standard controller. However, updating/rollback of the sensor part in the first series will have no effect as this is the same device as the Sensor+ configuration manager part.

Activating the Sensor+ option
To activate the Sensor+ option on an unpaired sensor with firmware 2.04 (Sensor
XR/EP 2.06) or higher use the following procedure:

  • Set the rocker switch to AUTO (middle position)
  • Press the pairing/reset button 3 times quickly
  • The LED will start blinking Magenta/Purple
  • If this fails, the sensor does not have firmware 2.04 installed yet. First proceed with the firmware upgrade procedure described in the next chapter
  • If successful, start the SHUTR Connect app, search for controller/sensor+
  • Select the sensor+ found and connect.
  • You will now see the sensor+ configuration manager part at the top of the screenand the sensor part in series 1.
  • You may now start pairing devices into series.

Uasghrádú firmware
To enable a sensor as a Sensor+, the sensor needs to have firmware version 2.04 or
higher installed (Sensor XR/EP 2.06). To verify the actual firmware version of the
sensor, do the following:

– Set the 3-way switch to OFF
– Press the pairing/reset button 5 times quickly within 3 seconds. This will enable
Bluetooth on the sensor.
– Start the SHUTR Connect app, press search and connect to the sensor.
– The app will show the firmware version in the sensor icon.
– If the version is not 2.04 or higher (Sensor XR/EP 2.06) you first need to upgrade
the firmware:

  • Select (tap) the device and select “Update” at the bottom of the screen.
  • The app will contact the SHUTR server (may take some time) and show the available firmware versions.
  •  Select the latest version and start the upgrade.
  • The firmware will be uploaded to the sensor and installed.
  •  After the installation the sensor will restart, and the app will disconnect.
  •  Wait for the LED to stop blinking and return to a steady color (do not remove the power during the installation of the firmware!)
  •  Verify that the upgrade was successful by connecting the app again using the
    nós imeachta thuas.

Deactivating the Sensor+ option
When changing to a SHUTR Controller configuration, the Sensor+ should return back to a normal sensor configuration. Use the following procedure to return the Sensor+ back to its normal sensor operation:
– Use the app to unpair all components making sure that only the Sensor+ configuration manager part and the Sensor+ sensor in the first series are visible.
All paired components need to be online during this unpairing to make sure they are really unpaired!
– Follow the reset procedure in the next chapter
